We’re looking for an exceptional Key Account Manager - Marine to help us make a difference to our planet.

As our Key Account Manager - Marine, the job may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in the office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and the location advertised will be your contractual place of work.

Our opportunity is full time, 37 hours per week, but we would also consider applicants wishing to work a minimum of 30 hours per week and we will also try our best to consider those intending to work a job share. Your world of expertise

The Transport Team sits within the Markets Directorate, and collectively manages customer and stakeholder relationships in the transport sector (land, sea, air & space) that are mutually beneficial, align to Met Office and government strategies and deliver profitable revenue. We contribute to the Met Office by understanding customer requirements and working with colleagues in Markets and beyond, to deliver a range of existing and new services to address the customer’s needs.

You will lead on international maritime activities, including acting as the Met Area 1 Co-ordinator, in close conjunction with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) in addition the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO).

The role will maintain and develop strong and productive relationships with new and existing customers associated with the marine industry to realise extraordinary impact and benefits whilst delivering profitable revenue.

Primary focus will be on relationships and contracts with MCA, UKHO, Department for Transport (DfT); and supporting the UK’s role in the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Your key duties

  • Support the representation of the UK and Met Office within international maritime meetings and working groups. This will be through activities such as:
    • Acting as the Met Area 1 co-ordinator, on behalf of the UK.
    • Involvement in setting of global policies, and supporting regulation, to ensure safety of mariners.
    • Influence future maritime services and standards to maximise the use of meteorology to enhance safety and efficiency, and reduce CO2 emissions.
  • Develop and build profitable long-term relationships with existing and new customers in the marine sector, in line with sector plans. This would be primarily for the regulated marine sector, and would entail reporting on delivery to MCA, DfT and Met Office Executive.
  • Develop and maintain account plans and engagement strategies to identify and promote activity in areas of greatest potential, aligned to emerging Met Office capabilities. Including the use of a CRM system.
  • Understand customer needs and align to Met Office capabilities in order to maximise the value of weather and climate services for the customer.
  • Provide sector specific and customer insight to support Business Lead and Products Team to manage product lifecycles, including the identification and development of potential new product or service offerings.

National and international travel is a component of this role. Additionally, due to the international nature of the work, remote meetings will often be outside of normal UK working hours and therefore flexibility of work pattern is required to accommodate these.

As our Key Account Manager - Marine, your total reward package will be up to £57,639 annually, which includes:

  • £41,725 base pay
  • An outstanding Civil Service pension, with an average employer contribution of 27%
  • Relocation Assistance may be available
  • Annual Leave starting at 27.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) after 5 years and option to buy or sell up to 5 days per year of annual leave

Essential Criteria, skills and experience:

  1. Proven ability of working collaboratively across internal or external teams or stakeholders with a history of using your networks to get things done through influence and collaboration.
  2. Demonstrable experience of working with customers or stakeholders, agreeing a programme of work with them and reporting on progress against that programme’s deliverables.
  3. Successful track record in identifying new business opportunities and developing strategies to pursue them effectively, building relationships to maximise lifetime value.
  4. Proven ability to understand and describe users’ needs, gaining insights that can be translated into value propositions and new services.
  5. Ability to gain trust, build rapport and communicate clearly and persuasively, with people at all levels within an organisation using a range of written and oral media.

Desirable Criteria:

  1. Have marine operational meteorological experience or worked within the wider marine or oceanographic stakeholder environment.
  2. Have experience of either working with government or international organisations such as in working groups.

5. Assessment

6. Offer

7. Onboarding

Before we can confirm a start date, we will first need to complete security clearance and reference checks. These usually take between eight to ten weeks to complete. We'll also discuss any workplace adjustments that you may need. So they are in place on your first day.

8. Your first day

On your first day your new manager will introduce you to the team and you’ll start our online corporate induction. You’ll also be asked to update your details in our People Hub system including bank details ready for your first pay day.
