Your world of expertise

It is recognised that there is a UK skills gap in data science, data assimilation and research software engineering, both in terms of the number and diversity of individuals. In December 2022, the Met Office was awarded £2.5M funding for a new project to create a Transatlantic Data Science Academy (TDSA) in partnership with NOAA to help address these challenges.

The TDSA Project is split into three key work packages:

  • Work Package 1: Exchanges
  • Work Package 2: Career Development
  • Work Package 3: Sandpit

The People Development Team at the Met Office is supporting the delivery of Work Package 2. This theme will offer career development to Met Office staff and students or researchers at partner universities, through the delivery of structured career frameworks, training and learning-and-development activities.

To help deliver this, People Development requires a Performance Consultant to join our team. You will work with the TDSA Project Team, MOAP (Met Office Academic Partnership) partners and other learning and development experts to help shape, deliver and evaluate the Work Package 2 deliverables throughout FY2024/25.

As our Performance Consultant you will use a broad range of performance consultancy tools and techniques to carry out these key duties:

  • Work with the TDSA Project Team and partners to identify suitable learning solutions to meet the aims of the project and optimise business and individual performance.
  • Ensure metrics for measuring impact are identified and agreed, which are then embedded into the evaluation process for each intervention, enabling the project to produce Return on Investment / Return on Expectation reports and recommendations for change.
  • Champion the People Development learning philosophy and plan (70-20-10 model), role modelling learning best practice within the Met Office and with our external partners.
  • Work with Head(s) of Profession and senior leadership teams to define interventions that enable people to develop data science competence within their profession aligned to our People Framework

Why join us

Our work is life-changing, often life-saving and always life-enhancing. The Met Office is accredited as a 'Great Place to Work UK 2023' and in addition has achieved a place on both the UK's 'Best Workplaces in Tech' and 'Best Workplaces for Women' lists.

As our Performance Consultant, your total reward package will be up to £XX,000 annually, which includes:

  • £41,725 base pay
  • An outstanding Civil Service pension, with an average employer contribution of 27%
  • Annual Leave starting at 27.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) after 5 years and option to buy or sell up to 5 days per year of annual leave

Essential Criteria, skills and experience:

  1. A good understanding of the Met Office’s learning philosophy, including the 70:20:10 model, and how to work with subject matter experts to apply this to meet business need
  2. A proven ability to operate, and successfully deliver, outcomes with significant degree of autonomy within defined resources and operating framework
  3. An understanding of the importance of measuring the impact of interventions and knowledge of different methods by which this can be achieved
  4. A proven ability to work with others using influence and persuasion skills to achieve desirable outcomes
