Freya Lewin discusses the value of doing a marketing industrial placement with the Met Office.
Tell us about your background
After studying Business at both GCSE and A-Level, I chose to continue to study this at university, I am currently studying BSc Business at the University of Exeter, Penryn campus. My course covers a wide range of topics including sustainability, finance, marketing, research skills, and strategy. Through this, I have developed a strong interest in marketing. I have completed two micro-placements, one with a local mental health charity and another with a sustainable textile innovation company, where I focused on building social media strategies which aligned with each organisation’s values and audience.
Why did you apply for an industrial placement at the Met Office?
I first heard about Met Office placements through friends on science-based degrees and was curious to see if there were roles aligned with my business and marketing interests. I was excited to find several opportunities that matched my goals. After researching the Met Office, I was interested by the wide range of industries and customers they serve, which I saw as a great opportunity to gain broad experience.
The chance to research a specialised market and contribute to delivering services to essential industries really motivated me. I wanted my work to make a positive difference and knowing that the Met Office supports critical services across the country reassured me that I would be part of something meaningful.
What do you do on a day-to-day basis in your role?
My role in the marketing team focuses on industry customers, working closely with sectors like transport, energy, and water. I have been involved in competitor analysis, supporting product launches, content creation, event support, and maintaining the public website. Each day is varied, and I have had the chance to contribute to meaningful projects that support the Met Office’s goals.
For example, I was part of a team working on the launch of a new visualisation system for aeronautical users known as the Met Office Aeronautical Visualisation Services or MAVIS. I helped develop supporting webpages and knowing that my work played a role in onboarding a large number of users to a regulated and essential service was incredibly rewarding. It was fulfilling to see my contributions appreciated and to feel like a valued part of the team throughout the process. I also had the opportunity to present my work on regulated content to external stakeholders at the Civil Aviation Authority. I shared my research and recommendations on how we could improve our webpages while ensuring that essential information remained accessible and clear for users of our services.
What do you enjoy most about your role and why?
I enjoy the variety of work and the number of teams I have been able to work with. I have learnt so much, from understanding aviation products to being involved in events such as the Met Office Space Weather Operations Centre (MOSWOC) 10-year celebration. Initially, it was overwhelming to try to gain knowledge and understanding in these areas, but over time I have built confidence and knowledge that has allowed me to contribute to these projects.
How will this experience help you in the future?
This placement has helped me grow in three key areas: confidence, communication, and analysis. I now feel comfortable advising on content and reaching out to different teams. My written and verbal communication has improved significantly, and I have seen a noticeable difference in my critical thinking skills, especially in my university assignments this year. These are all transferable skills that will benefit me both when I return to university as well as my future career.
Why would you recommend doing an industrial placement with the Met Office?
I would highly recommend an industrial placement at the Met Office. The people are welcoming and always happy to help, making it a great environment to learn and grow. At the Met Office I have always been encouraged to ask questions, take my time understanding topics, and explore different areas. This is a great organisation to network across teams helping you build your confidence and knowledge, and every opportunity you take adds real value to your experience.
