Rhea Basra discusses her experience of doing an industrial placement in international business with the Met Office.
1. Can you tell us about you and your background?
My name is Rhea, and I’m studying Biological Sciences at the University of Warwick. I have a variety of work experience, from working as a waitress to volunteering in hospitals and schools. But my educational background is science focused, and so this placement is incredibly different to anything that I’ve done before.
2. Why did you apply to do an industrial placement with the Met Office?
Although the Met Office is a well-known and respected employer, I didn’t consider applying to work here until I’d discussed the prospect thoroughly with my family. With a background in biology, I had assumed that my placement prospects would remain solely in pharmaceuticals or research. But I wanted to follow a different path. When I discovered that the Met Office offers placements and found the job description for my current placement, it seemed to align with my interests and experience perfectly. So, applying seemed like a natural course of action.
3. Can you give us an overview of your role and what you do on a day-to-day basis?
Every day is different. I work on a variety of international engagements projects and partnerships, including our Weather and Climate Information Services (WISER) programme. My working days normally include regular meetings, and time for research and creating tools. I have various meetings with international partners and plenty of time for independent work.
4. What do you most enjoy about your role and what are some of the challenges?
I enjoy being able to network with and learn from a wide range of people who have such different experiences, expertise and skill sets. I also appreciate having the flexibility to do my placement remotely, which suits my personal circumstances. But I go to the office occasionally to meet my colleagues in person.
Working at the Met Office has been different to anything I’ve done before. So, adjusting to this has been a challenge, and something I’m still learning to do! But everyone has been extremely helpful and accommodating, answering my questions and explaining things to me.
5. How has your overall experience been with the Met Office so far?
The Met Office has such an open, friendly and intelligent community. Everyone I have met so far has been happy to schedule time to talk or introduce me to new things. I’ve found the organisation to be welcoming and accommodating of everyone, regardless of their background and circumstances, which has motivated me to succeed.
6. What support is available to you from the organisation?
There is so much support available, both professionally and personally. From line managers to task managers, and team members to networks and more, there are so many people who are willing to help me when I need it.
7. Why would you recommend doing an industrial placement with the Met Office?
I would certainly recommend doing an industrial placement with the Met Office, because of the work opportunities and the strong sense of community. Everyone is friendly and willing to share their knowledge, and there are so many avenues for personal and professional growth.
I’m not even halfway through my placement, but I have already gained and learnt so much. I’ve found it compelling to have the opportunity to work with so many different people of different backgrounds from around the world. And I have opportunities to work on projects that are helping people in many places.
